new york is the most densely populated city in the u.s. and over 40 million tourists visit the city every year. the 1.3 billion gallons of water required every day are delivered by a system of extraordinary scale and complex engineering. man: water is essential to the economic viability of new york city. reliable infrastructure and reliable delivery of water is a must. you have to reinvest in the infrastructure every single minute to keep it current. hurwitz: we have the stock exchange, we have the united nations -- failure can have a dramatic impact on the nation, and even internationally. so there's a really keen awareness that you always have to be fixing the system. things corrode, they rust. they get to where you turn them on and nothing happens. but it is so totally used in every nook and cranny, that making any accommodation to shut it down, to do something to it, is very difficult. narrator: two massive underground tunnels, called simply tunnel 1 and tunnel 2, provide most of the city's water supply. they run hundreds of feet below

in the city. and some of the other things you're seeing on the map is the approved businesses, the businesses are currently doing business in the city. one of the things we said once we started visualizing on the map the slow and more rapid growth of residential -- residential property in soma and then in 2011 you just saw obviously a huge residential boom in the downtown area. so, we've just actually -- we're a company in southern california. we just relocated up here, small little office in san francisco, trying to better understand the community moving at a fast pace here. part of doing that is working with the city and better understanding how we can support open data. so, thank you. the city council asked the police to escort them away. there was complete denial of the problem. 15 years later, water quality is on the agenda of every city council person in that local city, and that's completely a result of activists forcing the issue, surfrider and other local groups, saying, "hey, these water quality issues are real and you need to address them." and only until the public sort of creates that will will the politicians respond. narrator: while some cities deal with infrastructure issues, others have concerns about the sustainability of water supplies. allbee: it's not just about the sustainability of the assets, it's about the sustainability of our water resources. parts of this country that thought of themselves as water rich 20, 30 years ago, now are discovering that they really are not water rich, they have source supply issues, they have serious questions about how they're going to accommodate additional growth in their communities.

the cost of living in the city's going up. while san francisco still attracts many young lgbt people, being able to afford living here is getting harder and harder. i like generalize this question on my own, extending it to just about everyone. what can be done to keep this city attractive and affordable to the young and creative? a lot of people are coming here to have alternative lifestyles all over the map. they come here because the city is not necessarily their job. they will come here even without a job. they do not have a lot of money. as an operator, how do you answer this? >> it depends on what you're doing. headline talent is very expensive. you put your budget together and you see which can charge for a ticket. as i have the benefit of the venue over with promoters because i do not need to make money at the door, i can look at something and say -- i will be making this much, but i do not have to. i want to break even at the door. that lets me keep the ticket price down. frequently, and we put that out through facebo
